Issue 9: Successful Self-Relationship The value of self talk and how important is this? Do you want to become successful? Then read my stuff! I want to talk to you about a very important issue to me; the value of self talk, faith in yourself, and how important it really is to your mental health, success, and happiness. I have been down roads many will never see and those that have wish they had not gone there. There is hope for a better life. You do not have to be an addict, severely traumatized, or severely abused to have a lack of faith in yourself. Situations that create lasting impressions of worthlessness, learned helplessness, and little hope of changing your environment can leave you feeling unsure of your self. I have found that I had to find faith in me first. Having faith in God was not enough for me. I did not trust my decisions about who I was, my ideas, my beliefs, and felt I had to stay poor, own no possessions’, or desire these things to be on God’s side. If I was attached to them and cried if they were taken away I was evil inside for wanting. Once I realized that having faith in me was the starting point; I began to trust my own decisions, I could trust God, and the human race. Do not get me wrong you have to have good boundaries so you do not trust the wrong people. We were not meant to be in isolation alone. We need to be able to talk to others and to seek inside ourselves for the guidance to be successful in life. To find that special place, the energy that was given to us all, that is hidden away until you are ready, that eternal guidance that is different for each of us, what your purpose is, and what you can achieve, if you set your mind to do something. Foremost, seek yourself out within you. Learn how you came to believe all you do. If you look in the mirror, are you not a reflection of your caregivers, teachers, family, friends, associates, peers, and of all those individuals you wanted to be like and also those you disliked as well. You were molded into who you are. Now you can change and shape yourself, as an adult, into whatever you want to be like. Start defining who you really are. If you do this heart felt searching and become aware of where each idea, belief, and philosophy came from you can then analyze whether these thoughts hold true today in your life. If they do not hold true, change your thoughts, behaviors, and habits. You just have to practice open-mindedness. What we think about ourselves determines who we will become, what our limits are, and how successful we will be. Change this today, stop holding yourself back because you are afraid of the word ‘No’. How you talk to yourself and the relationship you have with yourself is the element of success. If you look in the mirror and dislike what you see, do you know why? You are seeing aspects of yourself that you can change, yes; you can change so that you see who you are becoming and not that robot that was molded into someone you do not even know that is reflecting back at you. I hated myself so much at one point I would punch the mirror when I looked at myself. I now look in the mirror and I am grateful the person I see whom saved me from myself.
